To take part in the programme you must have left the abuse and be living in a safe place. Before you are offered a place on the course we will ask you to complete a questionnaire with us to check that the course is
The course was developed because people who have been in abusive relationships often say that the hardest part of recovery is to deal with the distress and trauma caused by the abuse. This distress can affect things like your opinion of yourself, how you react to others, your drug and alcohol use , your relationships with your children and your mental health.
The course aims to:
- Help you recognise your own strengths and resources
- Help you recognise your coping skills and how you have used these to help you and your family survive the abusive relationship
- Help you develop new skills such as setting boundaries in your relationships with people
- Help you set goals for your future
- Help you build up your self-esteem and confidence
- Help you find ways of looking after your mental health and wellbeing
- Help you recognise the tactics that abusive people use to dominate and control others
- Help you to recognise potential unhealthy relationships and signs of abusive behaviour in the future
The course uses positive techniques drawn from counselling and mental health work such as positive self-talk and cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT). You will be asked to practise these between sessions and record your progress in a journal.
WHAG staff and volunteers are trained and accredited to deliver the sessions, and to create a friendly and supportive atmosphere during the sessions.
